Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Tulsa King’ Spin-Off Starring Samuel L. Jackson Loses Showrunner
Jul 15, 2025
Taylor Sheridan’s work can be seen everywhere, from being the co-creator of the hit neo-Western drama series Yellowstone to the crime drama Tulsa King on Paramount+. Now, the writer is preparing for Tulsa King’s spin-off, NOLA King, starring one of the greatest actors of all time, Samuel L. Jackson. While the upcoming series is highly anticipated, production hit a major snag recently that puts a temporary dent in its timeline. According to Variety, Dave Erickson, who co-created Fear the Walking Dead, signed on as the spin-off’s showrunner but had to depart due to a scheduling conflict. The series hasn’t been greenlit by Paramount+ yet, but the search for another showrunner is active as the series is a high priority. Erickson is still the showrunner for Mayor of Kingstown (joined in the second season) and Tulsa King (joined in season 3). The good news is that there are a variety of great showrunners in the industry, so fans shouldn’t be too worried about how long it could take to find one. News of the spin-off was first reported in June, and to set up its plot, Samuel L. Jackson will be guest-starring in multiple episodes of season 3 of Tulsa King and then make the move to his own series. Variety also reported that not many details about Jackson’s character have been revealed. However, the actor will be playing a high-profile gangster in New Orleans, sort of like Sylvester Stallone’s leading role, Dwight “The General” Manfredi, in the original series.

Here’s what we know about Season 3 of Paramount+’s mob drama ‘Tulsa King.’
During an interview with Collider to promote a different project, Jackson spoke about watching Taylor Sheridan’s shows and how he’s excited to be a part of the spin-off.
At least 15 of those shows are on my watchlist all the time, so I’m really happy to be in that universe. I was just talking to Pierce [Brosnan] about that earlier. I watched Tulsa King, and I liked it even before that idea came up. I know very little about what’s going to happen. I don’t know the character’s name. I don’t know what our history is. I don’t know anything about it, but I do know that I’m very anxious to jump into it and find out what it’s going to be.
What Is Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Tulsa King’ About?
Paramount+
Tulsa King follows the General (Stallone), an American mafia leader, who has recently been released from prison in New York and is sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he begins to set up a criminal organization. The role serves as the veteran film actor’s first leading role in a scripted television series. It also stars Andrea Savage as Stacy Beale, Martin Starr as Bohdi Geigerman, Jay Will as Tyson Mitchell, Max Casella as Manny Truisi, Domenick Lombardozzi as Chickie Invernizzi, Vincent Piazza as Vince Antonacci, Garrett Hedlund as Mitch Keller, and Dana Delany as Margaret Deveraux. The Paramount+ series has a stellar 89% Rotten Tomatoes score and is one of Sheridan’s most-watched shows. Sheridan worked on the show’s pilot, but isn’t too involved with the show overall, according to a 2024 interview writer Terrence Winter did with The Hollywood Reporter.
Taylor wrote the original version of the pilot, gave it to me, and said, ‘Take it and run with it.’ And I did. I literally only met Taylor, in person, one time — and that was two-and-a-half years ago. We just went off and did the show with Sly and I hear Taylor likes it. He’s certainly got enough on his plate for him to worry about what we’re doing over in Tulsa.
